Pumpkin Dissection
Pumpkins are for more than just carving- let's do some pumpkin science! Find out what you can discover about the parts of a pumpkin by observing, measuring, and dissecting it. Students will move through 3 pumpkin activities to identify physical properties, explore internal and external structures, and get a closer look at their seeds!
Task 1: What's On The Outside?
Use tools to observe and measure the physical properties of a pumpkin, such as color, texture, mass, relative density, stem length, number of ribs, and circumference. Sketch and label the external structures of a pumpkin, including the skin, ribs, and stem.
Task 2: Take A Look Inside!
Cut open a pumpkin to see what's inside. Sketch and label the internal structures, including the pulp, seeds, and fibrous strands.
Task 3: What's In A Seed?
Take it a step further and examine a pumpkin seed. Crack open the hull and observe the kernel inside. Sketch and label the seed and kernel, then use a diagram to explore the hidden parts inside, including the seed coat, embryo, epicotyl, hypocotyl, and cotyledon.
